"This is my senior year at Eagle Academy. I can not believe time has gone by so fast. I would like to thank the Foundation and the Eagle Academy for a great education. The college application process is the next step in preparing for this long journey to becoming a true man in society. Would you be so kind as to write me a letter of recommendation? The names of the colleges will be provided in the near future. The experiences and opportunities at Eagle Academy have been monumental. Starting with having a wonderful staff, a mentor, visiting colleges from the 9th grade, marching in the African-American Day Parade, debating from Columbia to Stanford University, attending the University of Vermont and Michigan's debate institute in the summer, and traveling to Hungary for five weeks. The BuildOn program allowed me to assist the homeless in my community and around the world. It was life changing. Once again, thank you very much for your time, effort, opportunities, dedication and supporting me as a young man."
Jordan, Senior at the Eagle Academy for Young Men
Founded by One Hundred Black Men, Inc., the work of the Eagle Academy Foundation is guided by our belief that education and character provide the keys to open doors of opportunity. Our educational model offers an innovative and effective response to the frightening trends facing young men in urban communities. The New York City public high school graduation rate is currently at 54% and as low as 40% in many minority communities. The data clearly and consistently depicts a pattern of low-graduation and high dropout rates for Black and Hispanic students.
The foundation of our unique schools is a strategic partnership between students, principals, administrators, teachers, parents, mentors and community supporters. All participants are committed to our core values of academic excellence, leadership and character development. These guiding principles are supported by mentoring, parent involvement, and community service.
Our schools provide a comprehensive, high-quality college preparatory education for young men that results in Eagle graduates attending and succeeding in college. Our mission is a direct response to the urgent need to reverse abysmal graduation and college completion rates among young men in urban centers, particularly African-American males. The Eagle Academy Foundation tailored curriculum is based on the developmental stages and learning styles of young men as well as the unique challenges facing urban youth.
The Eagle Academy Foundation motto is “We Believe”. We believe that our students will shatter negative stereotypes and defy low expectations. We believe that our students can be prepared for and will succeed in college. We believe in the long-lasting impact community support and positive role models can have on our students´ lives. In short, we believe in the futures of our students.
