Eagle Academy Foundation

History

In 2004, a group of educators, parents, community leaders and corporate partners, led by the One Hundred Black Men, Inc. opened the first Eagle Academy for Young Men in the South Bronx, NY. The Eagle Model, featuring parental involvement, academic rigor, mentoring, combined with extended day and summer programming was put into practice. The Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx was the first single sex boys public school to open in New York City in approximately thirty years. David C. Banks, current President and CEO of the Eagle Academy Foundation, was the founding Eagle Academy principal.

In 2005, the Eagle Academy Foundation was established to expand into other areas that were in need of quality education for inner city young men, provide professional development for Eagle teachers, administrators and those working to change the educational outcomes of urban young men and provide the necessary financial support to sustain these initiatives.

The Eagle Academy Foundation supports two primary programs: the Eagle Academy Network of Public Schools in New York City and Newark, NJ and its Professional Development Institute.

From this inaugural class of 115 9th graders, the Eagle Academy network has grown:

The first Eagle Academy in the Bronx is now housed in a state of the art $50 million facility, enabling the school's expansion to a full Eagle Academy with grades 6-12 over the next few years.
The second Eagle Academy opened in the Brownsville/Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn in 2008, with an inaugural class of 6th graders.
A third Eagle Academy in Southeast Queens welcomed students in 2010.
At the invitation of Mayor Cory Booker, a fourth Eagle Academy has openned a school in Newark, NJ in September 2012.

In September 2013, Eagle Academy for Young Men of Harlem opened its doors, and became the fifth school in the Eagle network of schools.

Each Eagle Academy features parental engagement, academic rigor, college prep, extended day and Saturday programs, rituals, summer programs and mentoring -- all supported by the Eagle Academy Foundation.

Professional Development Institute Launched in 2009 to effect change at the national level, the Eagle Academy Foundation's Professional Development Institute is a dynamic national program to increase public discourse of the educational needs of at-risk urban young men. Through an annual conference, the Professional Development Institute educates school administrators, teachers, and thought leaders about the Eagle Academy Model to improve the educational outcomes of young boys in urban school systems across the country.
